Every Hermès Picotin is the result of painstaking handcraftsmanship, typically entrusted to a single artisan from inception to completion. The construction relies heavily on the traditional Cousu Sellier (saddle stitch), a technique dating back to the 1800s when Hermès primarily manufactured equestrian harnesses. This method utilizes a single linen thread, meticulously coated in beeswax, and two needles that pass back and forth through the same awl-pierced hole. Unlike machine lock-stitching, the saddle stitch ensures that even if one thread were to break, the entire seam remains secure and unraveled, guaranteeing unparalleled durability [3].

Equally important is the Astiquage (edge painting) process. The raw edges of the leather, particularly along the handles and the top rim of the bag, are never left exposed. Artisans apply multiple layers of a custom-formulated edge paint, carefully sanding and polishing the edges between each coat. This meticulous process, which must bend flexibly with the leather without cracking or peeling, seals the hide against moisture and wear while providing a flawlessly smooth, refined finish [4].
